        When you learn how to be a foreign language teacher at TESOL, no matter where you study a foreign language in the world, you are almost guaranteed to learn one thing :PPP. PPP stands for presentation, practice and production and has become the foundation of foreign language teaching. In short, first the language is presented by the teacher, then the student practices the language in a controlled manner, and thenthe student has the opportunity to produce the language in a more free environment.


        TESOL introduces you to another way of looking at course planning. You probably know the alternatives to PPP, such as ARC and ESA, so let's add our alternatives to the mix. Let's call our scenario PTP: Before task, during task, after task.

        In this lesson plan, the TESOL teacher first introduces the language through direct instruction or exposure to the language in a certain context (reading, listening, or visual). This is the pre-task phase, which prepares the student to be able to complete the task.

In the task phase, students are given tasks that they must complete in the way they see fit. This task should give students the opportunity to practice the language.


        In the post-task phase, the TESOL teacher reviews the success of the task by following up on common mistakes or highlighting good language. This stage can also give students an opportunity to respond to tasks in a personal and meaningful way. While the PTP program technique can be adapted for any type of language course -- grammar or vocabulary -- you can imagine it being particularly suited for skills classes. Reading, writing, listening or speaking lessons can be easily planned based on this simple template.
