Useful TESOL Skill-Make the Course More Exciting

How can you make the most of what you learn in TESOL courses to teach English? Well, I'll tell you about the TESOL course and some top tips to keep students interested, motivated and coming back for more.

        1. Have your students do some meaningful work

The more students who practice Their English between classes, the better. However, students are usually the busiest -- squeezing five days of classes into their busy lives. So when it comes to homework, short and meaningful is the key word. This means I usually only give consolidation or prepare the next lesson as homework. Usually, I ask them to revise the new words in the lesson and "test" them next time. Or I'll ask them to read/listen to something short, like Breaking News English, to discuss in the next lesson.

        2. Don't just talk

The better you know your students, the more likely this is to happen, and the whole lesson will drift by in a kind of lazy haze. The best technique is to maintain dialogue while doing something meaningful or functional. If your students insist that chatting is what they want to do, then make sure you correct and make sure you are doing your job of listening, correcting, refining and expanding on their language.

        3. Start at the top and fix it

Within a class, marking can be done anonymously together without attribution. 1-1 has nowhere to hide. Therefore, teachers can avoid correcting. My remedy was to ask permission in lesson one. Say, "How often do you want to be corrected?" Most students respond that they really want to be corrected, which means you all know what's going to happen. However, at lower levels or if confidence is not great, I tend to correct less. I want to build confidence and let them "try it" in English.

        4. Know your grammar

We rarely take direct grammar lessons through TESOL because most people want dialoge-based lessons, but I still have to know what's wrong and why and correct it accordingly, often with little time to think. So if a student says, "If it's going to rain, I'll take an umbrella."If I don't have an answer, I say: "In conditional sentences, we don't put if and will together, so it should be... ?"Let's hope they come up with the right sentences. Then, I might say, "That's the first condition. Enjoy building a relaxed relationship with your students. Making your students feel comfortable learning English and making mistakes is key.

Be prepared, give yourself space, and allow for free communication, but remember, this is their practice time. TESOL's offline courses are shorter, so it's more important to minimize teacher talk time and find ways to encourage students to do most of the talking.
