How to Create Wonderful English Lessons

        Time to throw away textbooks for young students? Well, maybe not quite. However, theme-based courses give us more room than regular textbooks to engage young learners and develop a range of different English skills. This is because young learners are curious, and if you can excite their interest, they will naturally want to explore the subject by writing, chanting, singing, and talking. Curriculum books have their place for young learners, but we've seen better learning outcomes when teachers and students are able to put books down and engage in more creative things.

        How to plan a successful theme class

        Be sure to spend a few hours before you arrive, as you may need to plan several classes at a time, or at least have a good outline for each class to be effective. But the rewards come from participation, learning and fun classes. Here are our top planning recommendations:

        1. Choose your topic.

        It could be anything of interest to you and your class, it could be relevant to your teaching environment, or it could be more generic.

        2. Then you need to think about, or brainstorm different games or activities that you can use in a theme-       

        based course. How would you introduce the new language around this topic? How will you control input to ensure that students are not overwhelmed by new vocabulary? How will you ensure that what is taught is practiced in a controlled manner? What games or activities are best suited for each class?

        3. Think carefully about your goals for each activity you plan to use with your class. Moving from the brainstorming stage to lesson preparation is sometimes the most complex part of the process and often the most time consuming for teachers. However, remember that with every lesson you should have a goal, which will help you focus your thoughts and activities.
